Whether cat bites are aggressive or just love bites, you can usually tell by the context. Love bites are distributed by your cat only when cuddling, all other cat bites are used for defense or attack. However, this never means that your cat is malicious, but can often be traced back to errors in upbringing or lack of workload.
Love bite in cats – an instinctive action
Love bites can be traced back to the mating behaviour of cats. During mating, light bites can occur, but these are so delicate that they cannot injure the other animal.
When you stroke your cat, it may build up as much energy as it does during mating and then tend to bite as well. However, cats do not bite their teeth into the flesh with all their might, but only pinch their skin gently and carefully.
In the exuberance of the feelings this can also pinch a little more than your pussy intended, but a bloody wound does not remain afterwards. It’s best to take a little cuddle break, gently pull your hand back and let your furry nose come to rest.
Real cat bites really hurt
Cat bites, which serve the attack or the defense, cannot be derived from the mating behavior, but from the hunting behavior of the cats. If your cat grabs you with extended claws and bites you hard while stroking you, this is a sign of fighting behaviour and not a love bite.
This often happens if your cat has not learned as a baby that this is not right. The little cat teeth don’t hurt so much yet and it’s so cute when the mini fluffy balls try to play predator. Therefore, it is tempting to allow kittens to bite while petting. But how would she know as a full-grown cat that she can’t do that anymore?
Cats love bites disaccustomed – so goes’s
The best way to get your kitten to stop behaving like this is to shout “Ouch”, say “No” and stop stroking immediately. Then you lower the cheeky dog from your lap and ignore it until it calms down again.
It is similar if your cat suddenly attacks you from ambush and bites you hard. Here it can be helpful if you regularly load your little bullies with hunting games.
Cat bite – a sign of pain?
Another possibility is that you have accidentally stroked your cat in a place that causes her pain. She may have previously sent signs of mood swings that you didn’t notice.
If your cat bites you hard in the hand, arm or finger for the first time, it may be ill and should be checked by a vet.
As a precaution, consult a doctor if a cat bite has left bloody, painful wounds. Otherwise an infection may develop unnoticed.
